I am the great-granddaughter of Major Arden who lived at Higher Stiniel Farm, Chagford. His wifes name was Elizabeth. They had 2 children called John Arden and Nora Elizabeth Arden. My mother's (Noras daughter) maiden name was Helen Hewison-Corn. Major Arden was the Master of the Mid Devon Fox Hounds. I recently visited Chagford and would love to have more information or photos of the family or farm if any one is able to help. Also, it would be great to have contact details for the Chagford History Society. I thought it was a very beautiful place and look forward to finding out more about my family and their history in the town. Thanks. Karen Piangnee

Does anyone know if Whiddon is the same as Whyddon or have any info on these people. Remember Chagford well as child in the the 40's and 50's before coming to Canada.

Hi, Can anyone help? I am searching for information about a sister of my Grandfather Arthur John Aggett b Chagford 1874.His sister was Anna b 1867. When she was about 18/20 yrs old she was painted in oils sitting on a rock somewhere close-by Chagford, with a shawl over her shoulders. The painting was called "A Devonshire Lass". Some time after completion the painting was exhibited at the Royal Acedemy of Arts London. Anna married William Hill a Farrier and lived in the Square Darlind Lodge Chagford. They later took over the Sandypark Inn. They had 2 children,Reginald and William, Regionald was killed in WW1 and son william finished up in Exeter.I believe the painting of his mother was with him. There the trail goes cold.Any help about the painting, its whereabouts, what it was like etc would be gratefully received.I have a lot of info about the Aggett history but this little "snippet" eludes me. Thank you all. John H. Aggett.

Dear all, have just found your excellent site - I lived in Chagford from 1949 - 1957, went to the school in New Street and lived in Meldon Road at no. 22 next door to the Mortimores on one side and the Wards on the other! Went to Okehampton Grammar School on an ancient Arscotts bus - no heating - brrrr! My father was Harold Randle (also known as Eddy) and my Mother, Mavis they ran a thriving Olde Tyme dance club for many years and were very much involved in Chagford carnival! My Garndparents (Alfred & Ada)are in yor beautiful churchyard, together with some other local relatives - Lily Hockin who was a tailoress wholived in Fernliegh and my great grandmother is also there somewhere. We left in late '57 to move to Bedford, my Mother;s home town but still come back from time to time - have great memories - a wonderful place to grow up. Trish (Tricia/Patricia) Burridge nee Randle. PS Burridge is a local name too - my husband Gerald lived there for a time, his parents were Frank & Rene - agricultural haulage - later moved to Higher Thorn and then Hittisleigh to farm in the early 50's.

My genealogy research into my father's family (STATT) led to Chagford, which still deserves much more research on my part than I have been able to hitherto undertake. I would like, one day, to see St. Michael's, "STATT BRIDGE" and "STATT HOUSE", the latter two, I've been told, are under the care of the Dartmoor Park Service.

It is great to discover your site. We are greatly interested in Chagford. We have traced my husband's Scutt/Scott family, beginning with Gilbert Scott to the 1600's at Hole farm. Have a wonderful picture of the old stone house there, now on my wall. I understand there were still Scotts at Hole circa 1950. I would like to hear from anyone who knows the Scott family history, and possibly their Serle,Endacott or Brock family connections in the area. I would be willing to share information. Jean

I am currently tracing the family of my late father William Charles Sampson. I have established that his father also called William (my grandfather) was born in Chagford. The 1901 census shows that the family lived in the High Street. The head of the family was Thomas Sampson and his wife was called Susan A Sampson. Other members of the family (Brothers & Sisters) were Frederick,John,George,Jessie and Elizibeth. I am reliable informed that both my grandfather and his brother George left Chagford and moved to London before the first world war. My grandfarther eventually ended up living in Kent. Any information would be welcomed.

I am trying to research the Hunt family. My father-in-law is Richard Charles Gibson Hunt (originally DUNNING Hunt) - now known as Hunt-Taylor. His family were for many years the doctors in Chagford and we have seen many of their gravestones still standing (or, sadly in one case, fallen but nonetheless remaining) in the church yard. His beloved Aunt Con lived at the original (NOT the present) Pixie Holt. We believe she died in the 1970s. Does anyone still remember any of the Hunt family, or possibly have any interesting information, please? We would so love to hear. Richard Hunt (87) is still interested in his roots, as are his children, Barry and Valerie.

I am researching for a book - Who isn't? Came across a reference to Chagford - A Reverend Conibear was minister of the Bible Christian Church there in 1848. It appears that marked the end of the weaving industry. Does any one have any information about Rev. Conibear? And hey, what about Steve Waugh's great 102 NO today.

Visited Chagford today, the village where I grew up.It was sad to see the old Electricity Shop empty, my home for over 20years. Many older Chagfordians will have known Phyllis and John (Jack) Mills my parents. Still couldn't resist a browse around Webbers and Bowdens. I never cease to marvel at both these shops. Sir John Harvey Jones was right about them in his book. Regards Penelope Parsons nee Mills

Hi there, as part of my geographphy disserattaion studies I am using Chagford as a case study comparing rural and semi rural settlements. Many of the residents have already assisted me by filling in questionnaires I delivered around Chagford in September. I have been very impressed by the response so far - thank you very much (there is still time for those who havent!) and I will be up in Chagford again tomorrow (1st Nov)to do further work. It seems a lovely place with great sense of community ;-) Thanks, Anna Knight

Hello Chagford from Sydney Aus. I like to look at Chagford sites since we trace our Knowling family from Lower Jurston Farm 1600 and had connections with St Michaels until the family moved to Ilsington, Ashburton, then Australia. Elizabeth in Buckfastleigh has helped us make the connections. Regards Bruce Knowling.
